annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ
yajñād bhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ

All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rain. Rains are produced by the performance of sacrifice, and sacrifice is born of prescribed duties. (BG 3.14)

As a prescribed duty, we all have to show compassion to all living beings, especially to those who suffer because of hunger. Doing this act of charity benefits us, as mentioned by the Lord Himself in the Bhagavad-gita.
